The title of most historic small town in Texas
belongs to the bustling community of Bastrop. Located 30 miles (48 km) east of
Austin, the city boasts 131 buildings
and sites on the National Register of Historic Places, as designated in 1979.
Originally settled by Spanish soldiers as early as 1804, the town is named after
Baron de Bastrop, who had served as Stephen F. Austin's land commissioner. However,
he was actually a commoner from the Netherlands on the run for embezzlement charges.
Bastrop was officially incorporated under Texas laws in 1837. The city is served
by the Bastrop
Advertiser and County News, which is the oldest semi-weekly publication in
Texas, established in 1853. Bastrop's Main Street reflects this exciting era in
history, with quaint architecture, mingling with new corporate buildings. To experience
local history, visitors can stop by the Bastrop
Opera House, the town's cultural center circa 1889. The informal Victorian
decor plays host to year round dinner theater productions. The Bastrop
County Museum and nearby Central
Texas Museum of Automotive History are other historical points of interest.
The Colorado
River flows through the city and nearby Lake
Bastrop serves as its reservoir. It is a popular fishing spot, with species
like catfish and largemouth bass residing in its waters. The river's governing
body maintains two public parks, North
Shore Park and South
Shore Park, both ideal for camping and water sports. An enticing mix of local
flora and fauna can be experienced at Bastrop
State Park.
